Quick answer
- Match the gift to licence, age, height and whether they want to drive or ride.
- City options and prices differ; every figure is dated from the operator's own page.
- Buy with booking lead time in mind; Christmas peak dates fill early.
A driving experience gift puts someone on a racetrack, either behind the wheel with a coach beside them or in the passenger seat while a professional drives. It suits keen drivers, cautious first-timers and kids alike, but only if their licence, age and height match the car they are booked into. Use the checks below before you pay.
DrivingExperiences.com.au is a general information site operated by Dominet BV. We don't sell experiences or vouchers, take bookings or rank operators, and we don't receive payments from operators. Prices, age and licence rules, dates and voucher terms are set by each operator and change often, so check the operator's own page before you buy or book. Facts were checked on 5 November 2026. Read our general information notice. Gift prices and rules below are as published by each operator on the dates named.
Who a driving experience gift suits
The first question is whether your person wants to drive or ride. Check the licence rule for a drive gift. Fastrack asks for a provisional or full car licence and accepts valid international licences, as listed on its FAQ page on 5 November 2026. Norwell welcomes confident L platers through to P platers, full licence holders and international licences, as listed on 5 November 2026.
A passenger ride removes the licence question and opens the gift to children and non-drivers. Fastrack's Rookie Racer V8 hot laps suit children aged seven and over, two hot laps for $99 at Sydney Motorsport Park and Sandown, as listed on 5 November 2026. Queensland Raceway lets passengers over seven ride along, as listed on 30 October 2026. Rally School Australia's Sydney Triple Hotlap was listed as great for kids aged ten and over on 30 October 2026. One caution here: another page gives a different age, so confirm the number with Rally School before you buy, and our rally driving experience guide has more. Norwell's hot laps terms, read on 5 November 2026, set a minimum age of 14 and minimum height of 120cm.
Drive gift or hot-lap gift
A drive gift puts the recipient in the driver's seat. Fastrack includes a Motorsport Australia accredited coach in the passenger seat for every lap, talking through a headset, and says no prior track experience is needed. A hot-lap gift, also called a ride, flips that around: the recipient sits in the passenger seat while a professional drives.
Supercar means two things in this market. It can be a V8 race car of the kind raced in the Supercars series, or an exotic road car such as a Lamborghini, Ferrari or Lotus. Fastrack calls the exotic version a driving appreciation experience, not a race experience. If you are unsure which format fits your person, our hot laps guide, V8 driving experience guide and supercar driving experience guide explain each one.
Fastrack says to allow about three hours for drives, including sign-on, briefing, suiting up and laps, or about 1.5 hours for rides, in its information read on 30 October 2026.
If your recipient dislikes driving, ask if they would enjoy riding with a professional. A passenger experience removes the steering task while keeping the track setting. Norwell's hot laps booking page gives an average duration of about 20 minutes, as read on 5 November 2026.
The word “supercar” matters when buying a surprise. Check the actual car and format before choosing a voucher, especially if the recipient has a particular exotic road car in mind.
Timing: booking lead times and Christmas peak
Think about the booking date as well as the gift date. V8 Drive Day lists open-dated certificates so the recipient can book later. Once booked, change fees can apply. Fastrack lists free changes more than 14 days out and $30 at 8 to 14 days. Its terms read on 5 November 2026 say $50 at seven days or less, covering the seven-day gap in its experiences page wording. V8 Drive Day Perth lists an $80 re-booking fee for changes within 7 working days, as listed on its FAQ on 5 November 2026. The same V8 Drive Day FAQ requires 48 hours notice or the voucher is voided. Norwell hot laps terms read on 5 November 2026 allow free changes up to 48 hours before, then charge $25 within 48 hours.
Weather can move a date too. Fastrack and V8 Drive Day publish wet-weather reschedule paths, and Fastrack's terms say a voucher stays valid for 12 months from a cancellation date if you cannot take the offered reschedule. Check the operator on the day of a doubtful forecast.
Allow booking time before Christmas peak demand. Operators set their own calendars, and preferred dates can go early. Let the recipient pick from the operator's calendar.

Vouchers, expiry and resellers
Expiry and refund terms sit with the operator or the reseller, not with the gift itself. Fastrack lists vouchers and gift cards as valid three years from issue or purchase. Norwell lists gift vouchers at two years. V8 Drive Day lists gift certificates at three years from issue. The Bend shows one-year gift voucher options on 5 November 2026, where an earlier listing also noted one-year or three-year options, so check the product page. Fastrack also says a voucher bought through one of its agents follows the agent's conditions until it is booked, which matters if you buy through a gift site rather than the operator. For the full picture on gift card law, the three-year minimum and its exceptions, see our gift voucher guide.
Fastrack's gift card page on 5 November 2026 listed $100, $200, $300, $500, $750 and $1000 values, redeemable toward drives or hot laps. Its terms list no refunds, but allow transfers if the original purchaser gives notice before expiry. Norwell's pages read did not publish voucher refund or transfer details, so ask before paying.
Before you buy or book
- Check the licence rule for the track you have in mind. A learner is fine at some, not at others.
- Check height and weight. Fastrack's FAQ lists drivers at 152cm to 194cm and riders at 135cm to 194cm, both under 130kg, while its experiences page gives 135cm to 194cm for both, so ask Fastrack if your person sits between those minimums.
- Check the exact passenger product. Queensland Raceway says over seven, while Fastrack Rookie Racer says seven and over. Confirm Rally School's conflicting age information.
- Check drive limits at The Bend. Information read on 30 October 2026 lists minimum age 21, weight limit 100kg and height limit 185cm, with manual cars.
- Check V8 Drive Day sizing. Its FAQ read on 5 November 2026 lists 135cm to 194cm and under 130kg.
- Note the change fees so a later date swap does not surprise the recipient.
- Confirm the expiry on the exact voucher, especially if you buy through a reseller.
Plan clothing and arrival too. Queensland Raceway requires long sleeves, long pants and enclosed shoes, with arrival 15 minutes early, according to its page read on 30 October 2026. The Bend lists full length clothing, enclosed shoes and arrival 15 minutes early on the same read date. V8 Drive Day's FAQ read on 5 November 2026 says arrive 45 minutes before a drive, or at session start for rides.
Frequently asked questions
Do they need a licence for a driving experience gift?
For a drive, yes. Fastrack asks for a provisional or full car licence, and Queensland Raceway for at least a learner's licence with 50 logbook hours, as listed on 5 November and 30 October 2026 respectively. A passenger ride needs no licence, which makes it the usual gift for non-drivers.
What is a good driving experience gift for a child?
A passenger ride. Fastrack's Rookie Racer suits children aged seven and over at $99 for two hot laps, as listed on 5 November 2026. Queensland Raceway allows passengers over seven. At Queensland Raceway, under-18s need parental permission and a legal guardian to sign the indemnity form, with photo ID and a Medicare listing with the child, according to its page read on 30 October 2026.
How long are driving experience vouchers valid?
It depends on the operator. Fastrack lists three years, V8 Drive Day three years, Norwell two years, and The Bend showed one-year options on 5 November 2026. Resellers set their own terms, so check the exact voucher before you buy.
Can a couple do a driving experience together?
Ask the operator about booking the same session for both people. Match each package to that person, and check the driver and passenger rules separately before buying.
When should I buy a driving experience gift for Christmas?
Buy early. Operators set their own calendars, and preferred dates can fill around Christmas, so give the recipient time to book. Check the change fees too, in case they need to move the date.
