Driving experiences in Australia: cars, tracks and rules

Facts checked

Quick answer

  • Driving experiences run at race tracks near every capital we cover, but each city has only one to three operators, and their rules differ.
  • Drive laps put you at the wheel with a coach beside you. Hot laps put you in the passenger seat while a professional drives.
  • We are a general information site run by Dominet BV. We don't sell experiences, take bookings or rank operators.

Someone has a birthday coming up and loves cars, or you've wanted to take a race car around a real circuit for years. The first questions are always the same: where can you do it near you, can the person actually drive the car (licence, age, height), what does it cost, and what happens if the date doesn't work. DrivingExperiences.com.au answers those questions city by city, using the operators' own pages and the ACCC, all checked on 30 October 2026.

DrivingExperiences.com.au is a general information site operated by Dominet BV. We don't sell experiences or vouchers, take bookings or rank operators, and we don't receive payments from operators. Prices, age and licence rules, dates and voucher terms are set by each operator and change often, so check the operator's own page before you buy or book. Facts were checked on 30 October 2026. Read our general information notice. Every price on this site carries the date and the operator page it came from.

Buying it as a gift

A few facts as at 30 October 2026

  • Licences differ a lot. Queensland Raceway accepts drivers with at least a learner's licence and 50 logbook hours, and Norwell takes confident L platers. Fastrack and V8 Drive Day want at least a provisional licence. The Bend sets a minimum driving age of 21.
  • Size limits apply. Fastrack and V8 Drive Day list 135cm to 194cm and under 130kg, although Fastrack's general FAQ gives 152cm as its driving minimum. The Bend's V8 drive lists 185cm and 100kg.
  • Track time is short. The Bend puts its five lap drive at about five minutes on track. Fastrack says to allow about three hours at the venue for a drive and about 1.5 hours for rides.
  • Vouchers don't all last three years. The ACCC says most gift cards bought since 1 November 2019 must last at least three years, with listed exceptions. Fastrack and V8 Drive Day publish three years, Norwell two years, and The Bend sells one year and three year options.

How we work

We only publish what we can check on the operator's own website or an official source such as the ACCC. Each guide lists its sources at the bottom with the date we read them. Where we couldn't check a price or rule, we say so rather than guess. Our research and sources page explains the process, and about this site says who runs it.

We list operators by city and in alphabetical order where there's more than one. That order isn't a ranking. As at 30 October 2026, we don't take payments from operators, and there are no partner or referral links on this site.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence for a driving experience?

To drive, yes, but how much licence varies. Some operators take learners and others want a provisional or full licence. For hot laps, The Bend and Rally School say no licence is needed, and the other operators we checked write their licence rules for drivers. Our V8 guide sets out each operator's rule.

What's the difference between drive laps and hot laps?

Drive laps mean you drive, with a coach or instructor beside you. Hot laps mean a professional drives and you ride. Some packages combine both, so check the split before you buy. Our hot laps guide covers passenger rides.

Can children do a driving experience?

Children can usually ride rather than drive. Fastrack's Rookie Racer rides are listed for ages 7 and over, Queensland Raceway passengers must be over 7, and Norwell's hot laps have a minimum age of 14.

Who runs DrivingExperiences.com.au?

Dominet BV operates the site. We're not an operator, agent or reseller, and we don't sell experiences or vouchers. For bookings, prices and terms, the operator's own website is the source.
