V8 driving experiences: prices and licence rules

Quick answer

  • Drive laps put you behind the wheel with a coach beside you.
  • Licence requirements differ, and some operators accept learners.
  • Check age, size, transmission and voucher rules for your package.

You've found a V8 drive as a gift, but the person you're buying for is still on L plates. Some operators take learners and others want a provisional or full licence, so the package name won't tell you who can drive. Prices and rules were checked on the operators' own sites on 30 October 2026.

DrivingExperiences.com.au is a general information site operated by Dominet BV. We don't sell experiences or vouchers, take bookings or rank operators, and we don't receive payments from operators. Prices, age and licence rules, dates and voucher terms are set by each operator and change often, so check the operator's own page before you buy or book. Facts were checked on 30 October 2026. Read our general information notice. Prices below are as listed on each operator's site on that date.

What a V8 driving experience is

A V8 driving experience puts you in a race-prepared V8 race car with an instructor or coach in the passenger seat. Drive laps mean you steer and drive. Hot laps or ride laps put you in the passenger seat while a professional driver drives. Our hot laps guide explains that distinction.

Fastrack includes a Motorsport Australia accredited coach beside you for every driving lap, with instructions through a headset. You don't need previous track experience. Its day includes sign-on, a briefing and suiting up before the laps. Norwell supplies helmets.

The word “supercar” can mean different cars. Norwell uses it for its Holden and Ford V8 race car experience, while Queensland Raceway uses it for its Mustang and Camaro option. Exotic road cars such as Lamborghini, Ferrari and Lotus belong to a different category. See supercar driving experiences if those are the cars you have in mind.

Where you can do one, by city

The table shows the shortest drive package each operator listed (not passenger rides), so you can see what the entry point looks like in each city. Lap counts differ, so the prices aren't like for like.

Prices are in Australian dollars per person, as listed on each named operator's own site on 30 October 2026. Norwell's prices include GST. Source links point to the operator pages used.

Licence rules differ by operator

At Fastrack, you need a provisional or full car licence. Valid international licences are accepted. V8 Drive Day accepts an Australian full licence, a P plate licence or an international licence, and drivers must show it.

Queensland Raceway accepts drivers with at least a current learner's licence and 50 logbook hours. You need photo ID and your voucher or booking confirmation. Norwell welcomes confident L platers, P platers, full licence holders and international licence holders. Visitors without a Queensland licence can attend with a current road licence.

The Bend lists a minimum driving age of 21. Its drive page didn't spell out a licence type when we checked, so ask before you buy.

Age limits

Fastrack says it has no driving age limit, but its licence requirement still applies. Its general ride rules also state no age limit, subject to height requirements. The separately listed Rookie Racer V8 rides suit children aged 7 and over.

Queensland Raceway passengers must be over 7. For participants under 18, parental permission is required. A legal guardian must sign the indemnity form and show photo ID and a Medicare listing with the child.

Norwell's hot laps package has a minimum age of 14. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian present to sign the indemnity form. The Bend's minimum driving age is 21. Each operator sets its own rules, so one venue's limits don't carry over to another.

Manual or automatic

Fastrack has automatic V8 race cars at all its tracks except Hidden Valley in the NT. Its Mustangs are manual only.

Norwell has manual and automatic cars. Queensland Raceway's cars use six-speed manual transmissions, but a manual road licence isn't required. The Bend's V8 drive cars are manual.

How many laps to choose

The listed V8 driving packages span 4 to 20 drive laps. Fastrack's Sydney and Sandown lists include 4, 6, 8, 10 and 20 drive laps. Its Mallala list includes 4, 6, 8 and 20. Some packages combine driving with hot laps, so read the split rather than treating the total as laps behind the wheel.

Fastrack's four-lap Slipstream costs $399, its six-lap Slingshot $499 and its eight-lap Enduro $599 at Sydney, Sandown and Mallala, as listed on Fastrack's site on 30 October 2026. Longer packages cost more in total, so the choice usually comes down to budget and how much time the driver wants at the wheel.

Lap count also differs from time at the venue. The Bend lists about five minutes on track for its five-lap drive. Fastrack says to allow about three hours for a drive visit, including sign-on, briefing and suiting up. Its rides-only visits take about 1.5 hours.

Height, weight and health limits

The limits below come from the operators' pages checked on 30 October 2026. Where a cell says to check, the limit wasn't on the pages we read.

Fastrack's Sydney experiences FAQ gives 135cm to 194cm for both drives and rides, which differs from its general FAQ's driving minimum. Ask Fastrack if the driver is near that limit.

Before you buy or book

  • Eligibility: Check the driver's licence, age, height and weight against the particular package. For a child passenger, check guardian paperwork too.
  • Dates and arrival: Confirm the session date. Queensland Raceway and The Bend ask you to arrive 15 minutes early. V8 Drive Day asks drivers to arrive 45 minutes early; riders arrive at the session start.
  • Changes: Fastrack bookings and vouchers are non-refundable, with changes more than 14 days out free and a no-show forfeiting the booking. Shorter notice changes cost $30 or $50, as listed on 30 October 2026.
  • Gifts: Fastrack vouchers last three years from issue, Norwell gift vouchers two years, and V8 Drive Day gift certificates three years from issue. The Bend offers experience vouchers with one-year or three-year validity options. Our gift voucher guide covers the checks to make when buying for someone else.

Frequently asked questions

Can you learn to drive in a V8?

Fastrack provides coaching and doesn't require previous track experience, but it still requires a provisional or full licence. Queensland Raceway accepts learners with 50 logbook hours, and Norwell welcomes confident L platers. None of these is a driving lesson in the road licence sense: they're track sessions with coaching.

Can I take part on P plates?

Fastrack, Norwell and V8 Drive Day accept P plate drivers. Queensland Raceway's minimum is a current learner's licence with 50 logbook hours. Other package conditions still apply.

Do I drive during hot laps?

No. A professional driver drives while you ride as a passenger. A combined drive-and-ride package includes separate driving and passenger laps.

Is there one V8 supercar experience age limit?

No. The Bend requires drivers to be at least 21. Fastrack has no driving age limit but requires a provisional or full licence. Passenger rules differ too, including Norwell's minimum hot laps age of 14.

Are automatic V8 race cars available?

Fastrack offers automatics except at Hidden Valley, with Mustangs manual only. Norwell offers both manual and automatic cars. Queensland Raceway and The Bend list manual cars.
