Hot laps: passenger rides by city

Hot laps are the way to feel a race car at full pace without driving it. A professional sits at the wheel and you ride beside them (or behind, at one Perth operator), which is why hot laps suit people without a licence and older children. The age and height rules still vary a lot between operators. Prices and rules were checked on the operators' own sites on 30 October 2026.

What hot laps are

Hot laps, also called ride laps, mean you're the passenger and a professional driver drives at race pace. Drive laps mean you take the wheel with an instructor or coach beside you. A package with both has separate driving and passenger laps.

Our V8 driving experience guide explains the driving side. Fastrack says rides take about 1.5 hours overall, compared with about three hours for drives, including sign-on, briefing and suiting up.

Age and height for passengers

Fastrack's FAQ states no age limit for rides, subject to size limits: passengers must be 135cm to 194cm tall and under 130kg. Its Rookie Racer page describes those V8 rides as suitable from age 7.

Other operators list different conditions:

• Queensland Raceway: passengers must be over 7. Under 18s need parental permission. A legal guardian signs the indemnity form and shows photo ID and a Medicare listing with the child.
• Norwell: minimum age 14 and minimum height 120cm. Under 18s need a parent or guardian present to sign the indemnity form.
• Rally School Sydney: describes Triple Hotlap as suitable for children aged 10 and over.
• V8 Drive Day: lists a height range of 135cm to 194cm and weight under 130kg.

Where a limit isn't listed above, it wasn't on the pages we checked, so ask the operator.

Hot laps for people without a licence

You aren't driving during a passenger ride. Fastrack lists its licence requirement for drives separately from its ride conditions. Rally School explicitly says no licence is required for Sydney Triple Hotlap, and The Bend says the same for its hot laps.

A driving requirement can still appear on an operator's general experience page. Queensland Raceway, for example, requires drivers to hold at least a current learner's licence with 50 logbook hours. Passengers there only need to meet the age rule above.

Drive and ride combos

A combo lets you drive with coaching, then ride with a professional. The driving portion brings licence requirements, even though the hot laps are passenger laps.

Prices below are Australian dollars per person, as listed on Fastrack's, Norwell's and V8 Drive Day's sites on 30 October 2026. Fastrack's Sandown and Mallala pages also list The Chicane.

Fastrack requires a provisional or full car licence for drives and accepts valid international licences. Its FAQ and Sydney page give different minimum driving heights, so check with Fastrack before choosing a combo.

Different cars for hot laps

V8 rides include race sedans. Norwell lists Holden or Ford V8 race cars, while V8 Drive Day lists Ford and Holden sedans and Holden utes. Queensland Raceway's V8 experience range includes Mustang and Camaro options, with hot laps available.

The Bend also lists Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Radical and rally car rides. Rally School's Sydney rides take place on dirt at Colo Heights. Queensland Raceway's drift ride pairs you with a professional stunt driver.

Before you buy or book

• Eligibility: check passenger age, height and weight against the exact package. For combos, check the driving licence requirement too.
• Dates and timing: confirm the session date and arrival time. V8 Drive Day says ride passengers arrive at the session start. Norwell lists about 20 minutes for its hot laps package.
• Changes: Norwell allows free changes up to 48 hours before; within 48 hours its reschedule fee is $25, as listed on Norwell's booking page on 30 October 2026. Fastrack bookings and vouchers are non-refundable. Its change fees are $30 at 8 to 14 days and $50 under 7 days, as listed on 30 October 2026.
• Gift validity: Fastrack vouchers run for three years from issue. Norwell lists two years, V8 Drive Day three years, and The Bend experience vouchers offer one-year or three-year validity options. Our gift voucher guide explains what to compare for a gift.

Frequently asked questions

Do I drive during hot laps?

No. A professional driver drives while you ride as a passenger. Look for drive laps if you want time at the wheel.

Can children do V8 hot laps?

Some packages allow children. Fastrack's Rookie Racer suits ages 7 and over, subject to its size limits. Queensland Raceway requires passengers to be over 7. Norwell's minimum is 14.

Can I ride without a driving licence?

Rally School Sydney and The Bend explicitly list hot laps with no licence required. At Fastrack, Norwell and V8 Drive Day, the licence rules are written for drivers, and the ride rules cover age and size.

Are all hot laps in V8 cars?

No. The Bend lists Porsche, Radical and rally car rides as well as V8 options. Queensland Raceway also lists a drift passenger experience.

How long should I allow for a ride?

Fastrack says about 1.5 hours for rides only. Norwell lists about 20 minutes for its hot laps package. Check the operator's arrival instructions as well.
